Every kid needs to go to Summer camp, but one week isn’t enough when family resources are limited, neighborhoods aren’t safe, when there’s really no place to go and nothing positive to do with hours of unstructured and often unsupervised time.

Our free City Gate day camps are an oasis of fun and enrichment in the very neighborhoods where they are most needed, a safe and structured environment with caring leaders, a place to form friendships, to grow and expand horizons through expeditionary learning trips, a place where the body is blessed with breakfast and lunch every day while the mind is enriched and character development encouraged. City Gate camps help close the achievement gap by stopping summer learning loss and instead providing new skills and knowledge that motivate and prepare kids for the coming school year.

Last week City Gate participated for the first time ever in United Way of the National Capital Area’s “Do More 24” online day of giving and raised $21,523 for our camps!  That will fund 26 children for a full summer (or 900 individual days of camp for kids). Our total was 12th highest out of more than 450 nonprofits participating in this annual event, and we thank our donors and board members for this amazing support!

200 kids hope to attend our camps this summer – that would total roughly 1400 weeks or 7000 individual days. The good news is we now have costs covered for the majority of those kids, but the challenge is to fund the rest!

Can you help one child by donating the cost of a day a week or the whole summer? Together we can provide a full summer of day camps for 200 children and youth!
